Accurate Background team members attended the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA®) 2011 Annual Conference & Exposition, which took place August 29-31 in Anaheim, California.
PIHRA, the largest global chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), is a California-based, nonprofit professionals association dedicated to enhancing the Human Resources field through networking, education, and advocacy. The theme of this year’s conference—California Human Resources Professionals: Making Strides for a Better Tomorrow—reflects the association’s goal of providing practical, applicable information to help Human Resource practitioners and providers be successful. Activities included more than 60 continuing education sessions (including Strategic Business Management and California-specific HR topics); a networking event at House of Blues, Anaheim; and an Exposition Hall with more than 100 providers. PHR-, SHPR- and GPHR-certified professionals were able to earn recertification credits by attending the PIHRA Conference’s concurrent continuing education sessions as well as the general sessions.
Keynote speakers included Dr. Esmael Adibi, Director of the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research and Anderson Chair of Economic Analysis at Chapman University; Keith Ferrazzi, a world-renowned expert on relationship development and the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Who’s Got Your Back; and Ann Rhoades, Founding Executive Vice President of People, JetBlue Airways. Their presentations covered relevant, timely topics—such as the current economic trends affecting our industry, how to create deep bonds and “lifeline relationships” with colleagues, and how to transform a good organization into a great people-centric one.
Among the concurrent session speakers was Accurate Background’s Senior Vice President of Client Development, Aaron Charbonnet, who led a continuing education session on the “risky business” that can be associated with background screening. In his presentation, he debunked common myths and misconceptions regarding nationwide background checks, international capabilities, social network screening, and online media searches. Mr. Charbonnet delved into compliance topics such as federal requirements, the complexity of state laws, and the various international regulations surrounding the use of background checks. Attendees gained an understanding of best practices and recommendations for maintaining a compliant screening program, and learned how to create a solid policy and program to better protect their organizations from costly lawsuits.
Accurate Background looks forward to participating in next year’s PIHRA Conference & Exposition, as well as upcoming 2011 trade shows and industry events. In particular, we will be attending the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration(ASHHRA) 47th annual conference (September 10-13, 2011) in Phoenix, as well as Taleo World 2011 (September 11-14, 2011) in San Francisco. We hope to see you at these and other upcoming shows.
